Naismith attended as a student in 1890 and was invited to join the faculty in 1891 by Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, head of the physical education department. During a psychology seminar, Gulick challenged his class to invent a new game. Gulick was desperately looking for an interesting indoor activity that was easy to learn and play indoors in the winter. Such an activity was needed for both the Training School and YMCAs across the country.

At the same time, Dr. Gulick assigned Naismith a private class, made up of participants who were completely disinterested in all the routine exercises, marching and mass gymnastics that were part of their daily compulsory session as part of the physical education course.
